Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthoses

Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthoses (KAFOs): The term KAFO is an acronym that stands for knee ankle foot orthosis and describes the part of the body that the device encompasses. The orthosis extends from the thigh to the foot and is generally used to control instabilities in the lower limb by maintaining alignment and controlling motion. Instabilities can be due either to skeletal problems, muscular weakness, or paralysis.

Types of KAFOs

Several different styles of KAFOs exist, with different material choices and several knee joint options. Depending on your functional needs and your specific condition, your orthotist will determine the best type of componentry for you.

Prescriptions & Proper Documentation

Writing an accurate prescription for a custom KAFO comes from the referring physician.  Specific documentation must also exist in your medical record from a recent visit with that referring physician for your insurance to consider coverage.
